Halloween Hype 2011, Pt. XIII Cannibal Holocaust [1980 / Ruggero Deodato / ****½] As brutal as always. As as difficult as some scenes are, it’s hard to look away. And gotdamn if Riz Ortolani’s score isn’t one of the best ever. As HallowMonth/HalloWeek/HalloEverything winds down (sad), I may be ramping up my viewings and shorting these entries to just the basics (i.e. no write-ups).

Riz Ortolani - Relaxing in the Savvanah [from the soundtrack for Cannibal Holocaust]

I just love how some of the most brutal horror films of the 70s and 80s also contain some the happiest, funkiest music within their scores. Case in point here.

In this otherwise completely disdainful review of the film, the reviewer does perfectly describe Ortolani’s score as “scuzz with confidence”. And what a score it is.
