All Things Shining, Pt 1 The films of Terrence Malick: Badlands by Matt Zoller Seitz
Just finished watching this beautiful film for the first time in many years. Just as stunning as I recall. I enjoyed this video essay on the film a great deal too.
Like Kubrick before him (well, I suppose they worked in the same eras plenty too), whenever there is a new Terrence Malick film it becomes an EVENT and an opportunity to reflect on his carefully chosen prior projects (though he appears to be hitting a career stride of sorts now, with his next feature already shot apparently). I guess I’m swept up in it too. Tough I can readily admit that this auteur is an acquired taste.
After re-watching Badlands, I also have my Blu-rays for The Thin Red Line and The New World waiting in the wings for viewing (don’t own Days of Heaven, but really should include it in my next Amazon order). It will be my first time seeing The New World, which I’m really anticipating - though not as much as the theatrical screening of The Tree of Life this summer (seeing The Thin Red Line on the big screen in 2000 was a damn pleasure).
Further Badlands related retrospecting of late, linking for my own reading later but feel free to read along!:
