Halloween Hype 2011, Pt. IV
Shivers
[1975 / David Cronenberg / *****]
David Cronenberg is a Canadian treasure and should be awarded whatever the highest order possible is in these here parts. He should be my write-in candidate for all elections going forward.
This film sparked a lot of national debate regarding taxpayers’ contributions to the arts/filmmaking at the time (click the title screen above for part of the story). Were I alive and paying taxes back then, I can’t think of a better place to allocate arts funding than to a genius at work like Cronenberg. The film is a blast and I love the Canadianess of it all and the low-budget passion it has. It just works.
Since I can’t think of a more opportune time to share such a list, here’s how I rank Cronenberg’s filmmography, in order of personal adoration (feature films only):
Videodrome
Dead Ringers
Shivers
A History of Violence
The Brood
The Fly
Spider
Crash
The Dead Zone
Eastern Promises
Naked Lunch
Fast Company
Scanners
eXistenZ
Need to see: M. Butterfly. Need to re-watch/barely remember: Rabid
The first 10 on that list are all excellent. 11-14 are perfectly fine films too, just not up to his usual high standards, in my eyes. Would like to re-watch Naked Lunch though… and Fast Company and Scanners can be pretty fun in their own right.
