30 Unforgettable Movie Opening Sequences →

Before I post the last entry of my “Favourite Songs of 2008” series tomorrow, I thought I’d link a handful of other fantastic songs from this great year that I shared here on Tumblr already (that haven’t already been re-mentioned). I’ve left out a lot of gems over this month of posting of course, but hopefully I’ve brought attention to at least one or two...

The Peanut Butter Solution [1985, d. Michael Rubbo]
Only one of my favouritest movies as a child (and forever more no doubt). I rented this on VHS more times than all the Back to the Futures combined I bet (that’s a lot). It creeped the hell out of me then, and still does after briefly scanning the above video. Sure, it’s a kids movie, made on the cheap in Quebec, but as with so many...

True Hip-Hop Stories: Lords Of The Underground
I’m really enjoying this series. Here’s hoping D-Nice keeps it up in ‘09.

The Big Shave (1967, d. Martin Scorsese)
I always enjoy seeing the early works of my favourite directors. No exception here. Gotta love the music and blood hallmarks that Scorsese would go on to perfect. I can’t help but notice a bit of influence this may have had on noted admirer Wes Anderson - specifically this scene from The Royal Tenenbaums.

My Bloody Valentine 3-D [trailer]
Well what do we have here? Although it bears no resemblance in tone, plot or Canadianess to the awesome original, this MIGHT just be fun. With it being a January studio release and a horror remake, the bar is set pretty low. Early word seems positive enough and most importantly, it spurred the DVD re-release of the original (that includes the long-rumoured,...

Mutant Ninja Turtles Inspire Violence →
This ancient (1991 is ancient, yes?) article is filled with perfect quotes:
“73 educators from 19 states who responded to the survey said kids emulate the turtles’ karate chopping and pizza chomping, but little else.”
- I totally chomped like only Mickey could!! Dude.
“Levin sees no end in sight”
- To this day, I can’t escape the kids and their makeshift...

Top 40 Music Videos of 2008 →
I haven’t been in the habit of seeking out music videos much these last few years, but lists like this keep me somewhat informed about the solid stuff still getting made.
Highlights for me (from that list):
The BPA [ft. David Byrne & Dizzee Rascal]: “Toe Jam”
Flying Lotus: “Parisian Goldfish”
Gnarls Barkley: “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul?”

The New Cult Canon: Exotica →
I was very pleased to see a New Cult Canon entry on one of my favourite films of the 90’s. I was able to catch it in beautiful HD a couple weeks ago and it hasn’t aged a bit. It’s still as devastating and captivating as ever, gorgeously shot, with a haunting soundtrack/score and outstanding performances. A proud moment in Canadian film history.

How they shot The Godfather →
Nice article, in promotion of the book. The next time I happen across $700, it’s mine.
I love this photo, in particular:
